==Court membership==
The template will automatically add a list of Justices comprising the court when the '''SCC''' parameter is given the correct year range in the <code>YYYY-YYYY</code> format. Use the entry from the [[#Court composition key|list below]] corresponding to the date on which the court ''heard the case'' (not necessarily the same year when the case decision was issued). This will automatically fill in the members of the court. For example, ''[[R. v. Oakes]]'' was heard on 1985-03-12, so use <code>SCC=1985-1987</code>. (Since the court composition changed in 1985, this was chosen instead of <code>SCC=1984-1985</code> by examining the dates used to construct [[List_of_justices_of_the_Supreme_Court_of_Canada_by_court_composition#Dickson_Court|the chart of the Dickson court]], or by reviewing equivalent sources.)

For cases heard since the last time the court membership changed, you may enter <code>SCC=present</code>. Updates to each such case page will eventually be necessary when the court's membership changes again. (If you instead enter a year range ''in this situation'', each such page will need to be updated every time a new year begins with the same court composition.) Historically, some court compositions lasted less than a year; for cases heard in those situations, use the same year twice, e.g. <code>SCC=2008-2008</code>.

===Implementation details===
Technically, the court composition key is determined by a [[Help:Switch parser function|<code>#switch</code> function]] inside of the source code for {{tl|Infobox SCC}}, and not in the section [[#Court composition key|above]]. Correspondence between these locations must be manually maintained.

If no entry in the <code>#switch</code> function matches the value of the <code>SCC</code> parameter, the page will be added to [[:Category:Infobox SCC with no court composition]], a hidden maintenance category.
